About Amy (she/her)

Hey! I’m Amy (she/her), and my doula journey began in 2012 after the medically compromised birth of my oldest child. While spending time in the NICU, a close family friend and doula supported us postpartum through a very complicated time. When I birthed my second child in 2015, this same friend/doula was present for my labour and it completely changed my birthing experience to be more positive, even though it was an even more high risk pregnancy and delivery than my first. During this maternity leave, I needed to make a career change and strongly felt pulled into doula work.

As the daughter of two disabled parents, diagnosed at 18 years old with my first autoimmune disease (Crohn's disease), and having raised a neurodivergent and disabled child for 12 years now, I have unique experience understanding the medical system from the eyes of a patient, caretaker and advocate. I understand very clearly the emotional elements of postpartum in high stress and less than ideal life circumstances. My favourite part of doula work is watching the self growth that happens when a person feels supported and has a non-judgemental space to discover what type of parent they are.

Over the last 9 years in doula work, I have had the incredible opportunities to attend the births of dozens of babies, support over 150 families locally, and even travel to Honduras to put my support and Spanish skills to the test in two hospitals in Tegucigalpa.

In my spare time you can find me watching a documentary, out for dinner with my partner of 2 years, or tending to my jungle of house plants.
